Adenotonsillectomy

Tonsil (Tonsil) and adenoid vegetation (adenoid vegetation) are two separate structures, but most of the time, since pathologies are in both structures, both may need to be removed. It is one of the most frequently performed ENT surgeries in childhood.

In my own practice, I generally perform tonsil and adenoid operations in the following cases;

1) Tonsils that are large enough to cause congestion, continual snoring and cessation of breathing during sleep

2) It is necessary to remove the tonsils in patients with recurrent tonsillitis 7 times in a year, 5 times in two consecutive years, and 3 times in three consecutive years in patients who have bacterial tonsil infections.

3) Infections that develop due to the size of the adenoid are recurrent middle ear infections, cr.otitis and sinusitis attacks.

The removal of tonsils and adenoids is performed under general anesthesia. Today, with coblation and thermal welding methods, there is almost no bleeding and these operations can be performed comfortably without the need for stitches, and our patients can return to their daily lives in a much shorter time.

Is there an age limit for tonsil and adenoid surgery?

In general, the lower age limit is 4-5, but there is no upper age limit. Tonsil and adenoid surgery can also be performed in recurrent tonsil infections, tumor suspicion, or obstructive tonsil growths that cause sleep apnea or snoring by making breathing difficult.

What should be considered after the surgery?

• Use the medicines given by your doctor regularly.
• Follow the diet list given by your doctor exactly.
• It is possible to take a bath the next day, provided that it is not too hot.
• Avoiding heavy activities for 2 weeks.

How do tonsils look after surgery?

If you look at the patient's throat after the surgery, you will see that the area where the tonsils are located is white-yellow. This appearance is not due to inflammation and will last for 15-20 days. Then the operation area will be covered with a pink colored tissue similar to the one inside the mouth.
